One of the areas in which executive producer Mark Burnett and his team have excelled on Survivor is finding ways to keep reinventing what should be a tired format by now.

Over the course of the 13 editions of Survivor that have aired since the summer of 2000, Burnett and company have tinkered with many things on the reality/game show, both on a grand scale and on smaller levels.

Last season, the show added the twist of an Exile Island and a hidden immunity idol, for instance. But there have been other alterations, too.

Over the years, the show has varied the number of competitors and the number of tribes. It has also, at various times, split those tribes along gender boundaries, along age lines and, this time around, along racial differences.

The most recent move was interpreted by knee-jerk critics as being dangerously inflammatory. It really turned out to be just another gimmick by Burnett, a master carnival barker whose prowess at revving things up is matched only in the world of professional wrestling.

In changing elements of Survivor, however, Burnett and host Jeff Probst — along with the rest of the team — have kept things fresh. Perhaps more important, they’ve thrown curves at the competitors, who might otherwise make the show boring because they’ve memorized all the ins and outs of the game.

Clearly, the quest to outwit, outplay and outlast the competition is as crucial inside Burnett’s production offices as it is on the tropical islands where the shows are set.

Luck plays a big part in everything, though. And Survivor: Cook Islands lucked out in a couple of key areas.

Jonathan Penner, a guy whose voice could easily double for Alan Alda, provided the show with its most arrogant character since Richard Hatch. And, in something surprisingly rare, there was even some sexual chemistry to this edition of the show.

Credit for that goes to Adam Gentry, who wins the Rob Mariano Award for being a lazy doofus with not many lights on upstairs, but with enough other attributes to attract the attention of the aptly named Parvati Shallow and Candice Woodcock.

Survivor: Cook Islands builds toward its climax tonight in much the same way as it always has, though.

A two-hour finale will crown the latest sole Survivor. A one-hour reunion show will then revisit all the players and rehash highs and lows of the entire season before setting the stage — step right up, folks — for the next edition of the series. 8 p.m., CBS

MSNBC.com is handicapping the chances of the remaining five castaways. Gentry not only did not fare well, but was kicked around hard.

Andy Dehnart, who writes “Reality Blurred,” a daily summary of reality TV news, was brutal to Gentry in predicting the outcome for MSNBC .com.

“He’s the next logical person to go,” Dehnart writes. “However, he’s been the next logical person to go for a few weeks now. The alliance has kept Adam around in large part because he seems incompetent and dumb.”

At least Gentry doesn’t have to ask Dehnart what he really thinks.

“His greatest strength, it seems, has been flirting with women on his original tribe,” Dehnart continues. “That’s worked for him and kept him in the game this long.”

” But if he keeps performing so poorly and appearing to be such a minimal threat, he could be carried along until it’s too late for the others to get rid of him, and that could be the best strategy of all,” Dehnart writes.

The hunky Gentry, 28-year-old former Spotsylvanian who now lives in San Diego and works as a model and copier salesman, has become a bit of an Internet sex symbol because of the show.

The Web was abuzz with chatter when Candice Woodcock, a Georgetown University grad student, was voted off the show and gave Gentry a passionate parting kiss.

But Woodcock told TVGuide.com there won’t be any relationship between her and Gentry off the island.

“We are very different people and very different personalities,” she said. “In the game, you have only a few people to choose from to work with, and we got along, and he trusted me. I don’t know why he decided to trust me, but he did, and I knew that, and I knew he wasn’t going to turn his back on me, and that’s a great thing to have in a game.”

Gentry, who headed to Virginia Tech after high school, has lived in San Diego since 2002.

His mother, Beth Gentry, still lives and works locally.

Final Challenges: The finale begins busting protocol immediately with five players still in the game. Their first challenge, Burnett reveals, “is the hardest puzzle we’ve ever done, called Compass Rose.”

 Challenge producer Dan Munday spent two days, “like a mad scientist, cutting pieces of wood,” says Probst. ” Finally, he showed us exactly how it comes apart and then asked us to put it back together. I quit after 30 minutes.” It takes the winner 25 minutes to solve it, Probst reveals, adding that “this final five had the highest IQs of any final five.”

The final four’s last immunity challenge involves balancing on a very small post, one that gets smaller and smaller — 10 feet above the water. “It required balance but also intense concentration and pain tolerance, because it was made of steel and was not comfortable,” Probst explains.

On Sunday someone will walk away one million dollars richer after Survivor: Cook Islands’ two-hour finale. While “puppetmaster” Yul has been a clear-cut favorite for weeks, Ozzy, the tree climbing waiter, has suddenly emerged as the player to beat. He’s a strong competitor and a nice guy who hasn’t had to strategize or stab anyone in the back to get as far as he has.

All that plus he knows how to slather mud all over his lean body like no one’s business!

If Ozzy makes it to the final three — and he’ll probably have to win immunity in order to do it — lots of local Survivor lovers will be rooting for him.

Andrea Holt, Ozzy’s aunt, lives in Palm Beach County. She wants everyone to know that Panama Hattie’s Cruzan Bar in North Palm Beach is hosting a Survivor party on Sunday at 7 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres will be served island style. CBS is scheduled to send a crew to the party for the finale.

And Bui will be just a bit more colorful than the last time viewers saw him. At a send-off celebration Thursday in Christiansburg, Bui sported a full-back tattoo of the Immunity Idol — the coveted “Survivor” prize that he tried and failed to win.

Although he’s not on the nine-person jury that will select “Survivor’s” $1 million winner, there’s no doubt the show’s host, Jeff Probst, will give Bui some attention.

Bui said Probst called him last Sunday.

“Jeff said, ‘Cao Boi, doesn’t matter how long you were on the show — you were the star of the show,’ ” Bui said Thursday before the 13th episode of the popular reality program.

With Parvati Shallow, the 24-year-old boxer from California, being the last person voted off the island, five contestants remain in the running. For the first time in the show’s history, there will be three finalists instead of two at the final tribal council. Virginia Tech graduate Adam Gentry — who has sported a Hokies hat on the show — still has a chance.

Bui, who also attended Tech, isn’t sure Gentry should flaunt his alma mater.

“We want to tell him to take it off,” he said of Gentry’s headpiece. “He’s embarrassing us.”

But Bui isn’t predicting who the winner will be.

“I don’t care,” he said with his characteristically glowing grin. “I’ve got the immunity idol.” Bui said he got the new tattoo after returning from the Cook Islands where the show was filmed last spring. He paid $650 in Australian dollars for the tat.

Although he left the show early, Bui is still getting applause. People stop him all the time on the street, he said, to say “You’re that guy on ‘Survivor!’ ”

“I’m still doing radio interviews outside the area, and I’ve been invited to speak at the Moose state convention,” he said.

Bui has become a sort of ambassador for the Loyal Order of the Moose, an international fraternity that he drew attention to on the show. During his time on the island, he wore a green Moose T-shirt in support of the organization.

When he left, he left the shirt behind.

“Yul has been wearing the shirt on the show,” Bui said, speaking of Yul Kwon, the 31-year-old management consultant who still has a good shot at winning. It’s Kwon who found the real immunity idol early on.

Although his appearance Sunday will be his last on “Survivor: Cook Islands,” Bui is hoping it won’t mark his retirement from “Survivor.”

“I haven’t had enough of adventure yet,” he said. “If they have ‘All-Stars II,’ I’ll be there.”

Next time, however, he says he’ll play the game a little differently.

“I would have people earn their trust with me. I’d fly under the radar.”

Although he will receive some money for his time on the show, Bui doesn’t know how much it will be. Contestants are paid on a sliding scale based on how they place in the competition. CBS does not allow disclosure of the amount.

Bui said he hopes whoever walks away as a millionaire from “Survivor: Cook Islands” won’t follow in the footsteps of Richard Hatch, the first “Survivor” winner. Known as the show’s “fat, naked guy” for refusing to wear clothes, Hatch was sent to a federal prison in West Virginia in August courtesy of the Internal Revenue Service.

“Whoever wins, I hope them the best,” Bui said. “Be sure they pay their taxes.”
