Survivor “cowboby” Cao Boi Still riding high

Cao Boi has never really fit in — especially in the Asian community.
So the 42-year-old Survivor: Cook Islands castoff, whose real name is Anh Tuan Bui, says when he learned this season was going to be a racial experiment, he knew he was in trouble.

“Let’s say instead of having different races of yellow and white and brown and black, I was mixed with another tribe. Most people wouldn’t even think I speak English and they’d think I’m old. Then I could have gone under the radar,” says Bui, a Vietnam War refugee.

“But I was among a bunch of Asian people who constantly tell me to shhh, shhh, shhh. That’s constant with the Asians — that’s all they ever do to me.”

Boi, who became known for speaking his mind, says he knew it was only a matter of time before his Asian teammates turned on him.

So it was no surprise when, on last week’s show, Yul Kwon aligned against Boi, who had come up with a plan to uncover which player had the secret immunity idol.

The idea was to create a tie vote between two of the three people who could have found the idol on Exile Island, forcing one player to either use it or compete in a challenge, with the loser going home.

The only problem was Kwon already knew who had the idol because he had found it himself.

“When (I was eliminated) I looked over at Yul and I gave him a grin and I smiled. I wasn’t shocked,” says Boi.

While he feels he’d have stood a better chance at winning the US$1 million prize had the teams not been divided by race, Bui thinks it was a smart move by CBS.

“Having the basic fundamental division of races, I thought, was excellent because in America we are wrestling with the immigration issue. It is still there, so either we are going to bring it out, address it and deal with it or else we are just spun into silence.”

Boi, a married father of two from Virginia, is a nail salon manager.
He says being cast on Survivor was just one of many great life moments.

Now he is out of the running to win, Bui says he couldn’t care less who comes out on top as long as they work for it.

“An ass with a million dollars is just a rich ass,” he says, adding he’s throwing his support behind Oscar “Ozzy” Lusth.

Last week, Cristina Coria, a former California police officer, was also voted off the island on a special double-boot episode of Survivor.

During an appearance on The Early Show, Coria, whose father was shot and killed when she was 12-years-old, said she was shocked one of the players drew a gun on the piece of paper they used to vote against her.

“I thought it was a low blow and disrespectful.”
